About

Each year we host our Champions for Children event to raise funds for A Family Place Relief Nursery. This year it could not have come at a more opportune moment. Day-to-day stresses have increased exponentially for all of us, but for hundreds of our community’s families already struggling to provide their family’s basic needs, the added burden of unemployment, sequenced by food insecurity, unstable housing, isolation, and limited access to healthcare has swiftly become overwhelming.

Thanks to our community’s long-standing support, from the first “stay at home order,”  our A Family Place staff and volunteers were poised to intervene responsively.  Thanks to our community’s enduring support, we’ve remained on the front lines of this crisis, providing critical support during this especially challenging time.

We’ve transitioned our diaper banks from an indoor to a drive-through model and have seen a usage increase of over 230%. We’ve created an emergency food delivery program supplying over 200 meals and food boxes weekly to high-stress families struggling with extreme food insecurity. We’ve introduced virtual home visiting, distributed family enrichment boxes to doorsteps, and helped connect families with essential resources, reducing stress and serving as a lifeline for hundreds of previously isolated children and families. We’ve provided respite care for the most stressed families in our program and our Relief Nursery classrooms will be reopening on September 21st.

These efforts would not have been possible, and will not continue, without exceptional generosity like yours and your opportunity to do so while celebrating this past year’s successes, is fast approaching.

Our October 24th Champions for Children Virtual Gala will feature exciting progress updates & heartwarming success stories. There’s no cost to attend, but please remember, the future success of A Family Place depends upon community contributions including those of event sponsors and attendees.

What is a Virtual Table Host?

A virtual table host is a key volunteer who invites friends, colleagues, or family members to gather to learn about protecting Yamhill County’s most vulnerable children, from the safety of their own homes.

Prior to the event, we will also be partnering with table hosts to facilitate intimate virtual invitee gatherings. All you’ll have to do is log in, fill your glass, and socialize with your table guests. Stay tuned for more details about our pre-event Zoom table gatherings.

On the day of the event, Yamhill County’s world class wineries and chefs would like to make it even easier for you and your “guests” to raise a glass and fork to keep our community’s most vulnerable children safe. Stay tuned for more details about our meal and wine delivery packages.

The Champions for Children program is designed to inspire. While it’s free to attend, it is our hope that every guest will want to give our community’s most vulnerable children the support and stability they deserve during this time of increased need.

Tips for Being a Successful Table Host

Invitations

  • Decide how you prefer to contact your guests: in person, by phone, or by email.
  • As previously stated, there is no cost to attend this virtual event so, please, share this link with your friends and family–whether they’re living just around the corner or in Timbuktu.
  • See FAQ’s for more detailed information.

Communicate Expectations

Champions for Children is AFP’s marquee fundraiser and “friendraiser” of the year. The funds generated at our event support are critical to sustain  essential child abuse and neglect prevention programs in our community and this year’s event goal is $100,000. Every dollar makes a difference, and each gift is gratefully received. We recommend that table hosts let their guests know ahead of time about the ask. To help your guests decide on the level of their gift, you may choose to share the level of your own gift.

 Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best way to invite guests to join me at my virtual table?

A phone call is usually the easiest and best way to invite your guests.

Tell your potential guest how important child abuse and neglect prevention is to you – make it personal!  If you are passionate about protecting our at-risk children your friends will be too! Let them know they will learn more about A Family Place and will be given an opportunity to support our work.

When they say yes, follow up immediately by sending them an invitation.

What if a guest cannot attend the virtual gala but would like to make a donation to A Family Place (AFP)?

  • Thank your invitees for their support and direct them to our online donation page.
  • If your invitees  prefer to mail a donation, simply suggest that they:
  1. Make the check payable to “Lutheran Community Services.”
  2. Write “AFP Champions Virtual Gala” in the check memo.
  3. Mail it to 435 NE Evans Street, Suite A, McMinnville Or, 97128.

How will I “fill” my table

Consider asking people from different areas of your life: business associates, friends, relatives, neighbors, anyone who cares about protecting children in our community.

Ask guests if they would like to invite others to join you…or, better yet, maximize your impact by asking if they would like to host a table of their own.

What will my guest be asked to give?

Now, more than ever, countless young lives and the success of our future community depends upon us all doing our part.

For this reason, we are counting on you to help us expand the reach of this event. With your support, we hope to gather 500 guests and raise $100,000. All donations of $100 or more will be matched by generous community members.

To make it as easy and flexible as possible, we offer the option to automatically donate each month by debit or credit card. For example, a gift of $250 would only cost $21 a month – much less than most of us spend on coffee.

Also, please remind your guests to take advantage of their company’s matching gift program (if available). It’s a great way to maximize their impact!

Who do I talk to if my business would like to donate to the event?
